Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson Visits Eighth Graders
Eighth grade students were honored to welcome Attorney General Bob Ferguson to campus to speak and answer questions about the role the Office of Attorney General plays at the state level. AG Ferguson opened his talk by asking if anyone had any experience with chess, which resulted in many hands in the air.
Students learned about AG Ferguson's path to his current position, about his love of chess, about how his office is involved in many current events, and about how growing up in a large family helped him learn how to navigate a room filled with differing opinions.
Students have been working this year with Humanities teacher Corey Paulson to learn about the government and how it operates at both the state level and national level. Through TVW’s Capitol Classroom, they were connected with a state lobbyist, Al Ralston, who worked with students to follow bills of interest. One particular bill, HB 1074, which will protect youth from tobacco products and vapor products by increasing the minimum legal age of sale of tobacco and vapor products, was passed after a hearing where Open Window eighth graders' voices were read verbatim by Mr. Ralston in front of the committee. Eighth graders had the opportunity to attend the bill signing by invitation of Governor Jay Inslee.

AG Ferguson's support of the bill and the students' interest and participation in the process of the bill inspired this wonderful opportunity to have him visit Open Window.
