Nurturing Young Readers and Writers
While many gifted learners exhibit a strong inclination for reading and writing, neither skill is innate. Instead, we understand that mastery of language, like any other skill, depends more on deliberate practice and encouragement over the years than on inherent talent. Even the most gifted musicians, artists, athletes, and other professionals dedicate years to honing their abilities, working alongside teachers, coaches, and mentors.
At the earliest grade levels, our literacy program is tailored to nurture emerging readers and writers. Students are surrounded by books and print in their environment, while their curiosity is fostered through carefully selected anchor texts and research-backed teaching methods. We place significant emphasis on developing robust phonemic awareness, which is supported by systematic phonics instruction and word study. Additionally, students cultivate their handwriting skills through a meticulously designed and research-based approach, using the "Handwriting Without Tears" program.
As students progress from emerging readers and writers to proficient ones, our curriculum evolves accordingly. The reading curriculum transitions from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," focusing on teaching students a variety of reading strategies used by strong readers. In writing, students explore and practice writing in different genres, producing longer and more intricate written works. Handwriting instruction also advances as students transition from manuscript to cursive writing.
